Real Madrid have followed through on the promise made by President Florentino Perez to make a €150m bid for a player on Tuesday. Their move for Julian Alvarez has been turned down however.
Last Thursday, Perez promised during his election campaign that on top of the signings of Denzel Dumfries and Ibrahima Konate, he would make a record transfer bid for a player on Tuesday of €150m. There was plenty of speculation over who it might be for, with Vitinha, Joao Neves and Michael Olise all strongly suggested. Yet on Tuesday, Real Madrid confirmed they had made a bid for Alvarez.

Los Blancos announced on Tuesday evening, that they had made a €150m bid for Alvarez, but that it had been rejected.
“Real Madrid C. F. announces that, following the meeting of the Board of Directors held today, it has made an offer of €150m to Club Atletico Madrid for the federative rights of the player Julian Alvarez.
After reviewing and evaluating the offer, Club Atletico de Madrid has expressed its gratitude for the proposal, made within the framework of the good relations between both clubs, and has rejected it, referring to the player’s release clause.”

Atletico Madrid responded to the statement with a series of laughing faces initially, before taking to Twitter/X to express their disdain for Real Madrid’s offer.

You may have confused politeness with gratitude, but just to be clear: we don’t thank you for anything.
We are neither considering nor evaluating any offer for Julián.

Los Rojiblancos then followed up with another statement mocking their rivals.

Atletico have maintained that Alvarez is not for sale, unless his €500m release clause is activated, amid heavy interest from Barcelona. That said, it has been suggested that he may have a clause in his contract allowing him to leave for less.
