Earlier this month, Real Madrid finalised the signing of Bernardo Silva, who will officially join on Wednesday when his Manchester City contract expires. The 31-year-old will link with compatriot Jose Mourinho at the Bernabeu, but first, he’s focused on helping Portugal win their first ever World Cup.
Silva will jet into the Spanish capital later this summer to sign his Real Madrid contract and be presented alongside president Florentino Perez. But he’s not thinking about that, as he confirmed to the media (via Diario AS) that his full focus is on Portugal and the 2026 World Cup.
“I’m not going to answer questions about Real Madrid; I am in too important a context to focus on anything else. I’m happy (to have signed), but I’m focused on the national team. The next few weeks will be dedicated exclusively to the national team.”
Silva on his versatility – “I adapt better to central positions”
One of the main qualities that Silva will bring to Real Madrid next season is his versatility. He will be a midfield option for Mourinho, while he can also be utilised on the right side of attack if deemed necessary – which could be the case, given there is no clear starter in that position. He was asked about this in relations to his role at Portugal, and he admitted that he does prefer being used in a more central role.
“It’s a tough question because I’ve played a lot of different positions. My features lean more towards a particular place. It’s difficult to answer, I’m more prepared to play in certain positions. If I tell you that I am a midfielder, as I played all season at City, it would be going against my career. My coach makes me play out of those positions. I’m ready. Of course I adapt better to the central positions, but I’m here to help.”
